Crime and police operations in Ogun State

Overview

The Ogun State Police Command has conducted several operations targeting criminal syndicates involved in robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping.

In late August, police arrested two suspects, Adeyinka Onakomaya and Olayiwola Kehinde, following an investigation into a stolen vehicle from April 2026. The operation, which targeted hideouts in Ota and Lagos State, led to the recovery of three locally made pistols and eighteen live cartridges. The suspects are believed to be part of a gang responsible for robberies across the Ota, Iju, Babaode, and Atan areas.

Shortly after, the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit engaged in a gun battle along the Papalanto–Ilaro Road to rescue a truck driver abducted near Ibese on August 25, 2026. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of two suspected gang members. During the search of the hideout, authorities recovered two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, mobile phones, and ₦2 million in suspected criminal proceeds.

These actions in Ogun State were part of a broader series of security operations across Nigeria in August 2026. Nationwide efforts included tactical teams foiling bandit attacks in Sokoto and Kano, as well as the rescue of 610 kidnap victims and the elimination of a notorious bandit kingpin in Katsina State, according to the North Peace and Stability Forum.

Further operations by Nigerian security forces resulted in the rescue of 15 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and 21 victims in Kogi State. In Borno and Yobe, troops engaged terrorists, neutralizing several individuals and recovering AK-47 rifles and improvised explosive devices. Additionally, the Kano State Police Command deployed 250 specially trained officers to border local government areas to combat cross-border criminality.
