Crime and violence in Potosí, Bolivia

Overview

In the Potosí department of Bolivia, recent incidents have highlighted issues of community violence and homicide. On October 11, police in the Lagunillas community intervened to prevent the lynching of two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, who were accused by approximately one hundred community members of involvement in a theft of 100,000 Bolivianos. Officers and prosecutors managed to secure the release of the minors through mediation.

Later, on October 20, authorities in Llallagua reported the arrest of a 24-year-old man, Carlos YM, in connection with the double homicide of two minors. Investigators stated that a verbal dispute following a futsal match escalated when the suspect allegedly retrieved a knife from his home to attack a nine-year-old child and a 15-year-old.
