Crime rate reductions in Brazilian municipalities

Overview

Several Brazilian municipalities have reported significant decreases in crime rates during the first eight months of 2026.

In Serra, robberies in public transport fell by 51.9% compared to the same period in 2025. Local authorities attributed these improvements to increased Municipal Civil Guard presence and data-driven prevention strategies such as ‘Operação Coletivo Seguro’. Similarly, Barra Mansa saw a 77.78% drop in violent lethality and a 75% reduction in intentional homicides.

Taboão da Serra also recorded a 32.9% drop in robberies between January and August 2026 compared to the previous year. Local security officials stated that the data indicates a “sustained downward trend” rather than an isolated occurrence.
