Criminal activity and fraud in Italy
Overview
Criminal activity in Italy has recently involved several high-value thefts and fraud schemes. In Rimini, thieves entered a lawyer’s residence to steal cash, gold, and watches valued at approximately 300,000 euros. Fraudulent schemes involving the impersonation of Carabinieri officers have also been reported. In Sant’Agata di Militello, two suspects were arrested after allegedly impersonating a relative and a Carabinieri marshal to steal cash and gold jewelry from a 77-year-old woman. Similarly, in Trieste, a recurring fraud involving individuals impersonating Carabinieri officers resulted in the theft of 40,000 euros worth of jewelry. In the Marche region, Carabinieri arrested three men linked to a series of 20 home burglaries occurring between January and April. Operating out of Silvi Marina, the group targeted several towns, including Osimo and Recanati, by forcing windows or frames to steal cash and jewelry valued at approximately 55,000 euros. The suspects have been placed under house arrest. Further impersonation fraud was reported in Bergamo, where two men were arrested following a jewelry theft in Villa d’Almè. One suspect allegedly impersonated a police officer to convince an elderly woman to gather her jewelry for a fake identity check, while an accomplice seized the items. A pursuit of the suspects led to a vehicle collision that injured two officers, though the stolen jewelry was recovered. Regarding the burglary spree in the Marche and Abruzzo regions, investigators identified the three suspects as men of Albanian origin, aged 36, 38, and 48. The group employed a “criminal commuting” method, using Silvi Marina as a base to launch nighttime raids into towns such as Osimo, Sant’Elpidio a Mare, Recanati, and Montecosaro. The suspects typically entered homes by forcing windows or door frames while occupants slept, utilizing a division of labor where two members performed thefts while a third acted as a driver.
