Criminal activity and thefts in France

Overview

Authorities in France have conducted several arrests related to high-value thefts. In the Oise department, gendarmes apprehended four individuals, including a father and son, suspected of stealing approximately 230 exceptional Japanese koi carp from the Aquakoï fish farm in Cauffry. The theft, occurring between July 30 and July 31, resulted in losses exceeding 80,000 euros. During searches, police seized 56 of the stolen fish, 14,800 euros in cash, a vehicle, mobile phones, and four rifles. Prosecutor Nicolas Septe of the Beauvais judicial court confirmed that the recovered fish had been released.

Simultaneously, law enforcement has targeted a gang responsible for damaging electric vehicle charging stations. In Haute-Garonne, three individuals—a father, his son, and the son’s partner—were caught in the act of stealing copper cables near Toulouse. Surveillance footage revealed a coordinated method where one suspect acted as a lookout in a running vehicle, another cut cables with shears, and a third collected the wires. This group is linked to approximately 15 thefts causing 300,000 euros in damages.

These incidents reflect a broader national trend of copper theft targeting at least 650 charging stations across France, with total damages to operators estimated between 14 million and 15 million euros. The surge in such activity is attributed to rising copper prices, which have exceeded 13 euros per kilo. In response, operators are exploring protective measures such as indelible dye capsules and Kevlar-reinforced cables.
