Criminal activity on Indian railways

Overview

Criminal activities involving smuggling and theft have been reported on Indian railways. In late August 2026, railway police at Ballia station in Uttar Pradesh arrested a coach attendant for allegedly smuggling liquor into Bihar to exploit prohibition laws.

Shortly thereafter, separate incidents occurred on different lines. On the Bandra-Bhuj Superfast Special train, passengers intercepted three suspected bootleggers attempting to flee with a large consignment of foreign liquor and beer. In Hyderabad, police arrested two individuals for allegedly sedating a passenger on the Sabari Superfast Express to steal a mobile phone and cash.
