Criminal investigations and fraud in Ontario
Overview
Police in Ontario have conducted several investigations involving trafficking and fraud. In late October, authorities in Gravenhurst arrested a woman for allegedly attempting to use a drone to deliver methamphetamine and other contraband to a penitentiary. Concurrently, a resident of Brampton was charged with theft and fraud following an investigation into stolen property used for unauthorized retail purchases.
Further investigations revealed distinct fraudulent schemes. In Oshawa, an individual was arrested for attempting to purchase a vehicle using forged identification; during the arrest, police also recovered fentanyl. In Toronto, investigators are pursuing suspects involved in a sophisticated scam where victims were misled by fraudulent contractors and subsequently targeted by individuals impersonating a police detective and a judge, resulting in losses exceeding $200,000.
Recent activity in Ontario includes investigations into vehicle financing fraud. In Puslinch, the Ontario Provincial Police are looking into three connected incidents where a car dealership was allegedly targeted by individuals using fraudulent identification. In Shelburne, a 27-year-old man faces theft and fraud charges following the alleged theft of a wallet from a dealership vehicle, amid a series of local retail and grocery store thefts.
Additionally, Durham Regional Police are searching for 31-year-old Jessan Vernet-Fort in relation to a SIM card swap scam. The investigation alleges the suspect used a victim’s identity to bypass two-factor authentication to make unauthorized credit card purchases.
