Círio de Nazaré religious celebrations in Brazil

Overview

Religious observances dedicated to Our Lady of Nazareth continue across Brazil. In Belém, the Círio de Nazaré procession involves large crowds and is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The tradition, which dates back to 1793, is rooted in the discovery of a small image of Our Lady of Nazareth by a local man named Plácido. The festivities include the Círio Fluvial, a maritime procession in Guajará Bay that requires significant logistical coordination regarding tides, vessel ornamentation, and navigation.

In Parauapebas, approximately 45,000 people participated in the 22nd Círio de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré on October 24, 2026. Following the theme ‘With Mary, United in Faith, in Hope and in Mission’, the four-hour procession moved from São Sebastião Church to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré. The event featured live music, fireworks, a drone light show, and the use of an agricultural drone to release an aromatic mist over the devotees.

In Goiânia, the Nossa Senhora da Assunção Parish continues to receive a statue of Our Lady of Nazareth brought from Israel, accompanied by a relic from the Grotto of the Annunciation. This follows a spiritual partnership established in August 2025 between the Sacred Family Basilica Sanctuary and the House of Nazareth in Israel.
