Croatian government policy and economic responses
Overview
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has addressed various domestic and regional challenges. At the Cernobbio Forum in Italy, Plenković discussed the impact of Middle East instability on energy prices and inflation, noting that Croatia’s inflation reached 4.1% in August due to a 17.4% rise in energy costs. He announced an upcoming autumn package of measures to support families and businesses against energy volatility and rising living costs.
Regarding regional governance, the government moved to establish three new regional councils for Northern, Central, and Adriatic Croatia to complement the existing Council for Slavonia, Baranja, and Srijem. To further coordinate sectoral policies and integrate local self-government units into regional planning, the government also established a new Council for Local Development.
Infrastructure and development efforts have seen significant funding allocations. During a session of the Council for Slavonia, Baranja, and Srijem, contracts totaling nearly 54 million euros were awarded for urban development, nature protection, and water management. In Osijek-Baranja county, national and EU-sourced contracts reached 2.09 billion euros through September 2026. In Split-Dalmatia County, discussions focused on education investments exceeding 300 million euros and sports infrastructure. Plenković suggested modernizing Poljud Stadium rather than a full reconstruction and pledged support for the Spaladium Arena, Gripe, and Brodarica stadiums. Additionally, the government addressed support programs for farmers and real estate building rights in Stobreč for the Hajduk camp construction.
