Crocodile sightings and safety alerts in Mexico

Overview

Crocodile sightings in various regions of Mexico have prompted safety warnings and preventive measures from local and federal authorities.

Initial reports emerged from Villahermosa, Tabasco, where residents posted warnings near a local park, and from Oaxaca, where crocodiles appeared on Playa Ventanilla. In response, Tabasco’s Civil Protection Institute announced plans to repair fences to keep reptiles in their natural habitats, while the Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection (Profepa) reminded the public that crocodiles are protected wildlife and that harming them is a federal crime.

As sightings expanded, authorities implemented further restrictions. In Puebla, the Capitanía de Puerto of the Valsequillo Dam restricted swimming, fishing, and boating due to a crocodile in the reservoir. Additional sightings were reported near the shoreline in Sisal, and in Tampico, a missing man narrowly avoided an encounter in the Cortadura Canal. Authorities continue to urge citizens to report sightings and avoid approaching or feeding the animals.
