Cruise industry developments in Norway and the Nordics
Overview
The cruise industry is seeing developments in regional infrastructure and professional travel engagement, particularly in Norway.
In Northern Norway, the Helgeland region is enhancing its cruise operations and shore excursion potential through sites like the Nordland National Park Centre. In Bodø, the Port of Bodø and Visit Bodø have strengthened cooperation to attract more traffic through infrastructure investments. These improvements include a new cruise portal, enhanced pier facilities with security and registration areas, and a larger gangway. Furthermore, a hydrogen plant is being constructed near the port to supply future ferries and ships.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) is shifting its onboard entertainment strategy toward original, curated productions. Meanwhile, travel professionals continue to engage with Norwegian itineraries. A group of approximately 20 Swiss travel experts recently participated in a familiarization trip aboard the Mein Schiff Relax, traveling from Kiel to Oslo with an itinerary featuring sales workshops and ship tours. Looking ahead to March 2027, the ‘Kreuzfahrtlounge at Sea’ program is scheduled to depart from Hamburg on the AIDAnova, navigating the southern coast of Norway to visit Bergen, Stavanger, Kristiansand, and Oslo. This program is designed to emphasize a flexible social structure with personal travel assistance provided on board.
Recent data indicates significant growth in Norwegian maritime travel, with cruise traffic more than doubling since 2016. In 2025, the country saw record figures of nearly 4,000 ship calls and over 6.3 million passenger visits, with options ranging from classic fjord cruises to Arctic expeditions in Svalbard. Additionally, the Port of Keflavik in Iceland has successfully completed its first turnaround operations, hosting eight calls during the boreal summer to test passenger logistics and coordination with the nearby international airport.
