In July 2026 the Chennai Super Kings announced the mutual end of Stephen Fleming's 18‑year association with the franchise, which began as a player in the inaugural IPL season and turned into a head‑coach role in 2009. Fleming oversaw five IPL titles, two Champions League Twenty20 trophies and a record twelve playoff appearances, but the side slipped to an eighth‑place finish in 2026, marking a third consecutive season without a playoff berth. The club thanked him for his “unwavering commitment, passion and leadership,” quoting owner Rupa Gurunath and managing director K.S. Viswanathan, while Fleming expressed gratitude for his time.

The departure left the head‑coach vacancy open ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. Among the candidates discussed are former Indian batter and recent Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani – who led the Chepauk Super Gillies to several TNPL titles – as well as former England player Brendon McCullum and others. Officials, including director Rupa Gurunath, said a decision will be made before the auction. Fleming will remain linked to CSK’s sister franchises, the Texas Super Kings and Joburg Super Kings, unless further changes occur.
