Cuban community and solidarity events in Argentina and Chile

Overview

On July 27, 2026, a large mural honoring Fidel Castro was inaugurated in Berazategui, Argentina, with the Cuban embassy’s participation. The artwork, created by artist Isaac Benapresy, marked the anniversary of the Moncada assault and Castro's upcoming centenary. The same day, Camagüey, Cuba, opened several socio-economic projects under the “Nuevo Bello Monte” plan, including a solar-powered electric-vehicle charging station, a recreational centre, a sports club, and facilities for vulnerable residents. The mural event also recalled Castro’s 1986 visit to Sancti Spíritus. A week later, on August 2, 2026, Cuban Consul Misleidys Reyes addressed the Union of Cubans Residents in Argentina (URCA), praising its role as a cultural bridge and its opposition to the United States’ blockade. Reyes highlighted a recent package of 176 economic reforms that could allow overseas Cubans to invest and support Cuba’s scientific and socioeconomic development. She announced a national meeting in November to honor Castro’s centenary and noted upcoming elections for URCA’s leadership. Global commemorations for Castro’s centenary reached a climax on August 15, 2026. In Havana, the First International Colloquium ‘Fidel: Legacy and Future’ drew over 1,500 delegates from 60 countries, attended by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Raúl Castro. International tributes included cultural festivals in Mexico, a statue in Managua, Nicaragua, and ceremonies in Láncara, Spain, as well as discussions in Brazil, Namibia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Italy. While supporters celebrated his legacy of sovereignty, critics highlighted the contrast between revolutionary rhetoric and the economic poverty experienced by many Cubans, noting allegations of wealth held by military elites and the Castro family. In September 2026, commemorations continued in Uruguay and Guyana. In Uruguay, the Communist Party organized a tribute where Cuban Ambassador Lissett Pérez described Castro’s thought as a process of ‘ethical deepening’ focused on humanism and anti-imperialism.
