Cuiabá public transportation fare reduction initiatives

Overview

The city of Cuiabá has implemented various free public transportation initiatives to improve urban mobility and social inclusion.

In September 2026, the municipal government announced the ‘Cuiabá Card Estudantil’, a program providing students with all-day free transit access. To encourage academic commitment, the benefit is tied to school attendance; students who are absent face immediate suspension of the pass.

This follows the broader ‘Tarifa Zero’ policy established under Law No. 7.248, which provides free transit to the public on Sundays and specific holidays. Since its implementation on April 29 of the previous year, the policy has benefited over 1.1 million passengers. The municipal government has invested R$ 7,090,000.00 to sustain the program, which covers more than 90 lines and 360 vehicles within the city.
