Cullera jacuzzi accident investigation

Overview

An investigation continues in Cullera, Spain, regarding the deaths of Patrick Joseph Tobin, 48, and Thomasina Tobin, 51, at a holiday villa in the Colina del Sol urbanization. The couple, identified as Irish nationals residing in London, were found unresponsive in a jacuzzi by their two teenage children on August 25.

Autopsies and toxicological analyses conducted by the Valencia Institute of Legal Medicine have ruled out homicide, suicide, and violent crime. Investigators from the Almussafes Judicial Police and the Guardia Civil have confirmed there were no signs of forced entry, no evidence of robbery, and surveillance footage showed no suspicious activity. Consequently, authorities have classified the incident as a double accidental death.

While the primary hypothesis remains suction entrapment—where a malfunction or blockage in the spa’s water absorption and circulation system creates a vacuum effect—new autopsy details indicate the couple did not die from drowning. Instead, the cause of death was identified as cardiopulmonary collapse caused by acute stress. Physical evidence, including puncture-like wounds, scratches, and marks on the bodies, continues to support the theory that the victims were caught by the system’s suction.

One working theory posits that one spouse became trapped, and the other died while attempting a rescue. Experts are examining the hydraulic mechanisms and electrical safety of the equipment to determine if excessive suction force led to the fatal cardiac arrests.
