Cult violence and police response in Osun State
Overview
In late September 2026, the Osun State Police Command issued a warning regarding a planned protest by a group identified as the ‘Congress of Cultists,’ which is reportedly linked to the Neo-Black Movement (Black Axe). Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi stated that security agencies would respond ‘decisively and appropriately’ to any attempts to disrupt public peace.
By early October, the situation escalated into active violence in the state capital, Osogbo. Following suspected clashes linked to cult activities, at least three individuals were reported killed or injured in the Owo-Eba and Arowomole areas. In response, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura deployed tactical teams to the affected regions to restore order and initiated intelligence-led raids against criminal hideouts.
