Cultural and athletic events in Crete

Overview

Various cultural and athletic events are being organized across the Crete region to showcase local heritage and traditions.

In Chania, the municipality is holding its fifth annual Traditional Strata event. This series of weekly performances in the Old Town and Venetian Harbor features music, dance, and traditional costumes, including a procession involving the Stavraetoi Traditional Association and the Hordaki Cultural Association ‘I Skloka’.

In the Platanias Municipality, the 16th ‘Land – Culture – Tourism’ Festival is currently underway as part of the ‘Cultural Summer 2026’ celebrations. Organized by the Municipality of Platanias in collaboration with the Region of Crete, the festival is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Platanias Square. This year’s edition is dedicated to Cretan wine and its derivatives, aiming to highlight local product quality and promote traditions. Activities include learning about the production of wine and tsikoudia, sampling local products, and participating in traditional music and dances, ending with a traditional Cretan celebration.

Additionally, the municipality has scheduled the 8th Musoures Road race for late September, which features multiple running categories.
