Cultural and heritage celebrations in Portugal

Portuguese municipalities continue to host diverse cultural, linguistic, and heritage initiatives. Linguistic celebrations include the IV Festa das Línguas in Picote, focusing on the preservation of Mirandese, and the III Feira das Línguas in Vila Real de Santo António, which marks the 40th anniversary of Portugal and Spain’s accession to the European Communities.

Multicultural and historical events remain prominent, with medieval fairs in Palmela and Marvila, the Alameda das Tílias em Festa in Amarante, and a multicultural festival in Lousã. Environmental and sporting activities are also being promoted, such as the Barrocais de Santa Catarina initiative in Tavira and various outdoor activities like surfing and hiking in Mafra as part of the European Week of Sport.

In observance of World Tourism Day and European Heritage Days, several regions are focusing on sustainability and technology. Vila Viçosa has submitted a dossier to support its candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status as a ‘Ducal Seat’. In Esposende, the ‘Tourism Esposende 2030’ strategy was presented alongside a commitment to becoming a Biosphere Sustainable Tourism Destination.

Digitalization remains a key theme, with Vidigueira, Cantanhede, and Oliveira do Hospital hosting forums on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on tourism. Additionally, the Municipal Museum of Loulé has joined the National Network of Intangible Cultural Heritage to safeguard local traditions, while Évora’s SEDES association is hosting debates regarding territorial protection and global uncertainty.
