Cultural commemorations of Federico García Lorca
Overview
The cultural legacy of Federico García Lorca has been highlighted through various exhibitions and performances. In Uruguay, nine dresses identified as costumes for the 1930 production of ‘La zapatera prodigiosa’ starring Margarita Xirgu were discovered in the Comedia Nacional’s storage. Following a conservation effort by students from the Escuela Multidisciplinaria de Arte Dramático (EMAD), the garments were scheduled for exhibition at the Teatro Solís in early October 2026.
Simultaneously, new artistic works inspired by Lorca’s universe were announced in Argentina and Spain. In Argentina, choreographer Oscar Araiz planned the premiere of ‘Quimera’ at the Centro Cultural Recoleta, a dance piece exploring Lorca’s poetic themes. In Spain, the Atalaya company scheduled ‘Lorca's Indomitas’ at the Romea Theatre in Barcelona, a production designed to create a dialogue between the female characters found in Lorca’s literary works.
