Cultural programming in Rio de Janeiro

Various cultural and musical performances are scheduled across Rio de Janeiro throughout late August and September.

Initial announcements highlighted diverse programming at Teatro Riachuelo Rio, including tributes to Clube da Esquina and the Bee Gees, an international performance by Sílvia Pérez Cruz, and a tour for Cícero’s album ‘Canções de Apartamento’. Additionally, the musical ‘Festa no Arraial’, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ set in a Brazilian ‘festa junina’, was scheduled at Teatro Clara Nunes.

Subsequent programming includes a stand-up comedy tour by Bruna Louise with stops in Duque de Caxias, Copacabana, Bangu, and Nova Iguaçu. Musician Raphael dos Santos is also set to conclude his ‘Do Regional ao Universal’ tour with a free performance at Sesc Duque de Caxias, featuring Brazilian guitar traditions.

Recent developments include new initiatives at Teatro Riachuelo Rio, which is offering free guided tours on August 28. Led by Guilherme Siman and Ana Flávia Botelho, the 45-minute immersive experience explores the theater’s backstage and history to highlight its significance as a historical landmark.

Furthermore, the historic Teatro Princesa Isabel in Copacabana is preparing for a reopening following its closure in 2024 after the death of founder Orlando Miranda. Director Gilmar de Araújo indicated that the venue and its surrounding gallery, which houses a significant archive of Rio’s cultural history including materials from the era of military censorship, are undergoing renovations with an expected reopening by next summer.
