Cultural tourism initiatives in Yogyakarta

Cultural festivals continue to be held across Yogyakarta to promote local heritage and stimulate the economy through tourism.

In late July 2026, the Sriharjo Kitiran Festival took place in the Bulak Truli area of Imogiri, Bantul. The event featured thousands of traditional windmills, or kitiran, displayed across rice-field terraces to preserve folk traditions and support the Sriharjo Village Tourism project. The festival included a unique 5 km run and aimed to boost local small businesses and craft centers.

By late August 2026, regional efforts expanded with the Jogja Fashion Carnival in the Malioboro area, which showcased 19 creative costume groups as part of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day celebrations. Simultaneously, the Prawirotaman Festival utilized culinary and fashion events to attract international visitors to the city’s international district.

In Sleman, the Transmigrasi Festival 2026 further integrated sport tourism with local economic promotion. This event featured a 6K Fun Run at Kaliurang, organized through a collaboration between BBPPMT Yogyakarta and Kadin Sleman to promote transmigration programs and MSMEs. Additionally, wellness-focused activities such as the Beyond Running 2026 event at The Rich Jogja Hotel have emerged as part of the broader regional event landscape.
