Cusco regional education development

In late July 2026 the Cusco regional government began a major push to improve education services in the department. On 20 July it inaugurated construction of a new headquarters for the local education authority (UGEL) in Espinar, a S/29 million project that will provide modern offices, multipurpose spaces, recreation areas and upgraded equipment for teachers and students.

A week later, on 31 July, the region expanded its reform agenda by launching the Regional Education Observatory and the Pladec digital platform. The system aggregates data from schools, UGEL units and the regional directorate, applying analytics to generate early warnings, monitor dropout rates, infrastructure conditions, health indicators and climate risks. The platform is intended to support evidence‑based decision‑making and proactive interventions across the Cusco education system.

Together, the infrastructure investment and the data‑driven observatory illustrate a coordinated effort by Governor Werner Salcedo and regional officials to strengthen both the physical and informational foundations of education in Cusco.
