Overview
Customs authorities in the border regions of Switzerland, Germany, and Austria have reported various seizures of illegal goods and weapons during inspections.
In August 2026, officials at the Thayngen border crossing conducted two separate inspections. The first involved a Belgian-registered vehicle from Romania containing approximately 60 stolen items, including jewelry and clothing, as well as tools for removing security tags. The driver was reportedly subject to active theft warrants in Germany. A second inspection of a German vehicle led to the discovery of an unloaded firearm.
In Vorarlberg, Austria, customs authorities reported that during the first half of 2026, more than 21,000 inspections—comprising roughly 5,000 truck checks and 16,000 mobile vehicle checks—resulted in 430 interceptions. Confiscated items included narcotics, smuggled cigarettes, prohibited weapons such as concealed stabbing weapons disguised as walking sticks, and goods lacking environmental permits.
