Cyberpunk 2077 film and CD Projekt RED expansion

Overview

Paramount Pictures and CD Projekt RED have entered a partnership to develop a live-action film based on the ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ universe. The project is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, with CD Projekt RED collaborating on the adaptation. Following the announcement, shares of the Polish gaming company experienced a 3% increase.

As the film enters development, uncertainty remains regarding whether Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand. Alongside this cinematic expansion, CD Projekt RED is progressing with its internal game development, including work on ‘The Witcher’ franchise and a sequel to ‘Cyberpunk 2077’.

CD Projekt RED has officially begun work on Project Hadar, the studio’s first entirely original intellectual property. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski described the multi-year conceptualization process as the company’s “biggest undertaking to date.” While the project has not yet entered formal pre-production, the team has started using Unreal Engine to create prototypes and test gameplay mechanics. The goal is to create an immersive, emotional, open-world experience. This project represents a strategic shift for the studio, as Hadar is being developed as a completely self-owned setting, unlike previous major franchises based on existing novels or tabletop games.

Recently, the studio finalized the foundational world-building phase for Project Hadar, establishing a coherent vision for the game’s universe. The development team currently exceeds 30 members and is expected to grow to approximately 50 by the end of the year. This progress continues alongside the development of ‘The Witcher 4’, which is currently targeted for a 2028 release. Industry analysts, including former BioWare executive Mark Darrah, have noted the significant financial risks associated with these massive productions, suggesting high-budget titles like ‘The Witcher 4’ may require sales of 15 to 20 million copies to cover costs and avoid losses.
