Cybersecurity threats targeting The Odyssey film

Overview

Cybersecurity researchers have identified multiple fraudulent schemes targeting audiences of the film ‘The Odyssey’.

Initially, Bitdefender reported a malware campaign where illegal downloads of the film were used to distribute the Russian-originated ‘Lumma Stealer’. These disguised executable files, appearing as video downloads, allow attackers to harvest passwords, payment data, and browsing history.

Subsequently, Kaspersky identified a separate global scam involving fraudulent streaming websites. These sites mimic legitimate services by offering free access or dubbed versions of the movie. When users attempt to play the film, a fake player prompts them to register, eventually requesting passwords and banking details under the pretext of activating a ‘free trial’. This tactic is designed for credential theft and financial fraud and is being deployed in multiple languages to target a global audience.
