Cyprus Filo Jet disaster political fallout

Following the Filo Jet disaster, Zeki Çeler, leader of the Social Democracy Party (TDP), has called for the resignation of the government, citing a collapse in management and oversight mechanisms. Çeler criticized the dismissal of the Minister of Public Works and Transport as an insufficient attempt to find a single scapegoat, arguing that the state must proactively eliminate risks through inspection rather than reacting after a disaster.

As the situation progressed, Çeler demanded an independent and public investigation into the incident. He rejected government-proposed research motions, arguing that the administration cannot act as its own judge regarding the oversight and authorization mechanisms under scrutiny.

Çeler is advocating for a dual approach: a parliamentary inquiry involving all political parties and a parallel independent investigation led by a respected judge. He proposed that this body include experts in law, maritime affairs, public administration, and security to uncover the full chain of administrative and political responsibility.
