Cyprus general election process and restrictions
Overview
The Supreme Electoral Council has initiated the process for general elections scheduled for December 6, which will determine the 50 members of the Assembly of the Republic.
To ensure neutrality, a series of election bans have commenced and will remain in effect until a new Cabinet of Ministers takes office. These restrictions prohibit state institutions, public economic enterprises, and local authorities from providing donations or assistance to political parties or candidates. The use of public resources, vehicles, and facilities for partisan purposes is also forbidden, as is the use of public funds for publications intended to influence voters.
Administrative restrictions include the suspension of all public appointments, transfers, and promotions for civil servants and contract personnel. Exceptions are granted for seasonal workers, temporary teachers, and essential healthcare personnel.
The official election calendar dictates that political parties must finalize candidates by October 27, with applications accepted on October 30. Voter lists will be available for review starting November 1. Election propaganda is set to run from November 10 through December 5, while public opinion polls may be published until November 21.
