Cyprus murder conspiracy investigation

Overview

Cyprus authorities, working with Danish Police and Europol, disrupted an international conspiracy to commit double murder. The plot involved an attempt to hire a contract killer via the internet to target two British siblings vacationing in Cyprus. The scheme was uncovered after suspects contacted an undercover Danish officer posing as an assassin.

Initial investigations led to the arrest of three suspects—one Irish national and two Norwegians—in the Larnaca and Famagusta provinces. The group had reportedly offered approximately €85,000 to €87,000 for the killings, allegedly arranging travel and weaponry via the Signal app. Recent court proceedings in Famagusta suggest the plot was organized by a user known as ‘Sponge Jobb’ and allegedly linked to the Irish Kinahan cartel. Evidence presented indicates the group intended to recruit smaller criminal networks from Ireland and Sweden, with plans to use a pistol, a motorcycle, and local accommodation, while potentially bribing authorities to avoid detection.

Following coordinated operations, five Swedish nationals, aged 21 to 28, were arrested in the Paphos district. During these searches, police seized a pistol, knives, masks, gloves, multiple mobile phones, cash, and documents. The intended targets have since left Cyprus. A Special Investigative Team continues to lead the case in cooperation with international agencies.
