Cyprus transport safety measures

In mid‑July, Cyprus’s transport minister Alexios Vafeadis announced a plan to replace selected speed bumps in Limassol with alternative safety features that would accommodate new bicycle lanes while maintaining traffic safety. The proposal, developed after consultations with the municipality and the Department of Public Works and incorporating police recommendations, awaited approval from the Limassol municipal council.

A few weeks later, Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris introduced a rapid‑intervention protocol for serious traffic incidents on the island’s motorways. The plan, prompted by a multi‑hour jam caused by a truck overturning on the Nicosia‑Limassol highway, outlines coordinated actions among police, civil defence and other agencies, a checklist of response steps, real‑time driver alerts via the CyAlert system, and contracts with private firms to speed vehicle removal and road cleaning when state resources are insufficient.
