Czech insurance and pharmaceutical corruption investigation
Overview
The National Center for Combating Organized Crime (NCOZ) launched an investigation involving the General Health Insurance Company (VZP) and approximately ten pharmaceutical firms. Police conducted raids at VZP headquarters and various pharmaceutical offices, including Boehringer Ingelheim, to examine suspicions of corruption and the unauthorized handling of medical data.
During the operation, three individuals were detained, including Petr Honěk, a former deputy director of VZP and current chairman of the board of the Příbram Regional Hospital. While the detainees were released without charge, the investigation remains active. Honěk has stated that the inquiry pertains exclusively to his former tenure at VZP and has no connection to his current hospital role, maintaining that he has committed no illegal acts. VZP is expected to act as the injured party in the case.
