Czech parliamentary debate over Ukraine visit

Overview

The Czech Chamber of Deputies initially rejected a request by Deputy Barbora Urbanová to travel to Ukraine following an invitation from Olena Kondratyuk, Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada. Chamber Speaker Tomio Okamura requested Urbanová withdraw the application, arguing that matters regarding Ukraine should be handled exclusively by the government. Urbanová declined to withdraw, maintaining that the country is a “parliamentary democracy”.

Despite the initial rejection by the organizing committee, Urbanová proceeded to Kyiv to meet with Kondratyuk. During the visit, Kondratyuk expressed gratitude for Czech assistance since 2022, specifically citing the ammunition initiative. The meeting aimed to observe Kyiv’s functioning under shelling and to discuss further support. While the Czech government coalition has expressed opposition to weapon funding, Okamura noted that approximately 140 million CZK has been sent to the PURL initiative to facilitate the purchase of U.S.-made munitions for Ukraine.
