Czech Republic economic growth and business optimism
Overview
The Czech economy has demonstrated signs of acceleration and resilience. In the second quarter of 2026, GDP growth was estimated at 0.4% quarter-on-quarter, supported by domestic and foreign demand, industrial production recovery, and household consumption.
By July, the economy showed continued strength in both the retail and industrial sectors. Retail sales grew by 4.8% year-on-year, marking 32 consecutive months of growth, largely driven by a 12.4% rise in online and mail-order shops. Simultaneously, industrial production increased by 3.1% year-on-year, with the automotive industry specifically seeing a 3.5% increase in production.
By September 2026, business sentiment reached a notable peak. According to the Moore Thrive Index, Czech companies reported the highest level of optimism in Europe with a score of 32.6 points, surpassing major economies such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Germany. This sentiment is attributed to recovering supply chains and improved operational efficiency.
Despite this optimism, labor market challenges persist. More than half of surveyed companies identify a tight labor market as a primary risk. While 37% of employers plan to increase staff, a mismatch remains between job seekers and the specific skills required by employers. The net labor market index has risen to 24 percentage points, reflecting growing confidence even amidst slow economic growth.
