Daegu regional high-tech industry and talent development
Overview
Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do have initiated large-scale regional projects to cultivate specialized talent in high-tech sectors. Through the Ministry of Education’s ‘Super-regional Growth Engine Talent Cultivation Project,’ the region aims to train 3,000 specialists in AI-based semiconductor materials, components, equipment, and manufacturing robots over a four-year period. This effort involves a collaboration between Kumoh National Institute of Technology and seven other regional universities to create a unified employment zone.
Parallel to semiconductor efforts, Daegu is participating in a biotechnology project alongside Chungnam and Gyeonggi provinces to train 2,600 specialists by combining process development, clinical verification, and AI data capabilities.
Daegu is further refining its industrial strategy by integrating system semiconductors with its existing robotics and mobility sectors. Rather than focusing on large-scale production, the city is prioritizing the design and verification of semiconductors tailored to local industry needs. To support this, the city has increased its budget by 1.71 billion won to fund development, verification, and university support. Educational pipelines are being strengthened through institutions like Gyeongbuk Mechanical Technical High School and Kyungpook National University to ensure a steady supply of industry-ready professionals.
