Dafne Zapata investigation and judicial protests

Following the July 2026 death of 13-year-old Dafne Zapata at the Doenitz Naval Militarized Academy, legal and social tensions have escalated in Tamaulipas, Mexico.

In September 2026, members of the ‘David Ruiz García’ autonomous civil resistance collective staged protests during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s visit to Ciudad Victoria. The demonstrators demanded the release of Danna Yanina, an 18-year-old detained in connection with the case, alleging she is being unjustly accused without evidence. The protesters also called for the removal of Tamaulipas Attorney General Jesús Eduardo Govea Orozco, accusing him of corruption and obstructing justice.

Shortly thereafter, a federal judge in Tamaulipas issued a definitive suspension of the trial against Danna Yanina. The suspension was granted to allow a federal court to review an amparo lawsuit filed by the defense, which alleges violations of due process and human rights. While the trial is halted pending this review, the judge noted that the suspension does not declare the accused innocent, nor does it automatically grant her release from detention.
