Dairy sector developments in India and Pakistan

In early September 2026, the dairy sectors in Bihar and Odisha, India, focused on infrastructure and producer support. Bihar planned a ₹350-crore processing plant in the Champaran region to handle approximately four lakh litres of milk daily. Simultaneously, the Odisha government announced a ₹2 per litre increase in milk procurement prices for farmers to encourage participation in the organized sector and planned the establishment of 1,200 new dairy cooperative societies.

By late September, price adjustments were being implemented in response to rising operational expenses. In Odisha, the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) scheduled retail price increases for various milk types, including a ₹4 per litre rise for toned milk, following the earlier decision to raise procurement rates to offset cattle feed and transportation costs.

In Karachi, Pakistan, milk sellers announced a price hike of Rs30 per litre, citing increased costs for livestock maintenance, fodder, and feed. However, the local district administration rejected this increase, maintaining that government-approved prices remain unchanged.
