Danish student organization reform demands
Overview
Danish student organizations have moved from highlighting general priorities to proposing specific structural reforms for educational institutions.
Initially, a report titled ‘Hørt’, published by Danske Skoleelever and the Center for Elevrådgivning, identified key student concerns including shorter school days, improved school food, and greater involvement in teaching. Madicken Luther, chairperson of Danske Skoleelever, noted the report aims to provide decision-makers with insight to encourage “more meaningful student involvement.”
Following these findings, student organizations including the Danish Gymnasium Students' Association (DGS), the Vocational Schools' Student Organization (EEO), and the National Association of Business School Students (LH) issued an open letter to Minister of Education Magnus Heunicke. They proposed three specific initiatives to strengthen student democracy: implementing an annual student council tax of 200 DKK per student, requiring at least one full-time student council coordinator at all youth education institutions, and ensuring democratic participation is not recorded as an absence.
