Dar es Salaam port and logistics expansion

Tanzania is implementing infrastructure expansions to improve the efficiency of the Dar es Salaam Port and reduce regional congestion. The Kurasi Logistics Park is scheduled to begin functioning as a port extension in November, serving as a site for cargo inspection, clearance, and government services. To support this, connecting roads will be designated as Customs Bonded Roads and mobile scanners will be deployed to process cargo without requiring return trips to the main port.

In conjunction with these developments, officials are focusing on the Kilimanjaro Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Kurasini to assess infrastructure needs. Regional authorities have called for the development of bypass roads and increased truck parking to mitigate roadside congestion. The Dar es Salaam Port is also expanding its storage capacity by approximately 180,000 square meters.

On a broader scale, the World Bank is evaluating financing for a second phase of the Dar es Salaam Port improvement programme. This follows an initial phase that helped increase annual cargo throughput from 14 million tonnes in 2015/16 to a projected 32.8 million tonnes by 2025/26. Discussions regarding strategic investments in infrastructure, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), continue to focus on supporting regional integration.
