Dasara festival celebrations in India
Overview
Cultural and religious celebrations, specifically the Dasara festivals, are organized across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In Mysuru, the Dasara festival, or ‘Nadahabba’, commemorates the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari over the demon Mahishasura. The 2026 festivities in Mysuru have transitioned into an 11-day event, beginning with religious rituals at the Chamundeshwari Temple inaugurated by Sri Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swami.
Planned Mysuru activities include palace illumination, inter-state cultural troupes, drone shows, and Kambala. The celebration is set to culminate on October 21 with the ‘Jamboo Savari’, a grand procession from the Mysore Palace to Bannimantap Grounds featuring a golden howdah, caparisoned elephants, and traditional musicians, followed by a Torchlight Parade.
In Bengaluru, various cultural performances are scheduled between October 9 and 15, including devotional music, Carnatic jazz, and solo plays. Additionally, the Phoenix Festival at Phoenix Mall of Asia is offering three months of entertainment.
In Vijayawada, the Dasara Mahotsavams at Indrakeeladri were scheduled to run from October 11 to October 20, utilizing AI-based systems, drones, and CCTV for crowd management.
Other regional traditions include the five-day Ravutaraya–Mallayya Jatrotsava in Devara Hipparagi, which features sacred processions, flower gathering, and ritualistic divine weddings.
