Dasara festivities at Kanaka Durga temple

Overview

The Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam in Vijayawada hosted the annual Dasara Sharannavaratri celebrations. During the Moola Nakshatram, considered the deity’s birth star, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was scheduled to offer silk robes to the Goddess as she appeared in the form of Sri Saraswati Devi. To manage expected turnouts of up to 300,000 devotees, authorities converted all queue lines into free darshan lines and cancelled VIP and protocol-based darshans.

Security measures included 3,500 police personnel, 5,000 staff members, 450 CCTV cameras, and a central command control room. A crowd prediction system monitored real-time arrivals at transport hubs, while provisions like drinking water, buttermilk, and food were distributed to those in line.

By the conclusion of the festivities, Temple Executive Officer VK Seena Naik reported that a total of 18.29 lakh devotees had performed darshan. Approximately 14.84 lakh visitors attended during the Dasara celebrations between October 11 and midnight on October 20. A subsequent surge of Bhavani devotees, many dressed in red to mark the completion of their deeksha, arrived on October 21 and 22.

To support the massive influx, the temple distributed nearly 40 lakh laddus and provided Annadanam meals to over 8.37 lakh devotees. Other provisions included 4.34 lakh buttermilk servings and 6.45 lakh biscuit packets. Medical teams provided outpatient services and emergency medicines to approximately 1.06 lakh people.
