DAX companies financial and employment trends

Overview

DAX-listed companies have undergone significant structural changes in their financial and labor profiles. Since 2022, these major German firms reduced their net financial debt by 22 percent to 196 billion euros, while equity rose by 21 percent to a record 991 billion euros. Despite improved debt ratios and increased liquidity among several companies, such as BMW and Volkswagen, the sector has faced employment challenges.

An investigation by EY-Parthenon revealed that DAX companies cut more than 46,000 jobs globally in 2025, representing a 1.2 percent decrease in total employees. This contraction was noted as the strongest employment decline among major Eurozone economies, contrasting with employment growth in Italy and Spain and a smaller decline in France. Specifically, the workforce of these 40 companies shrank from approximately 3.86 million to 3.81 million.

In the automotive sector, BMW is implementing a restructuring plan to reduce its divisions and management functions by 20 percent by mid-2027 to increase agility. To bolster competitiveness, BMW also plans to invest 2 billion euros in German production sites, including 1 billion euros for a new battery plant. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is facing pressure to reduce costs, with discussions involving potential plant closures and changes to working hours to improve productivity.

In the pharmaceutical sector, BioNTech is scaling back German operations due to excess capacity and declining demand for COVID-19 vaccines. The company is closing three production sites in Tübingen, Marburg, and Idar-Oberstein, a move expected to affect approximately 1,800 jobs as sites close in stages between late 2027 and late 2028.
