Day of the Dead commemorations in Central America

Overview

During the Day of the Dead commemorations, Honduras and Nicaragua observed various traditions and security measures.

In Honduras, security forces including the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Military Police of Public Order conducted a large-scale deployment to protect cemeteries. Military spokesperson Mario Rivera stated that troops maintained a presence within cemeteries and patrolled access roads to ensure family safety, while also assisting with cemetery maintenance. In Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, municipal officials supported citizens by maintaining public spaces during the high-traffic holiday.

In Nicaragua, thousands of families visited cemeteries across 153 municipalities to clean and decorate graves. While community and economic activity was high, reports indicated that religious masses were not held in cemeteries for the fourth consecutive year due to restrictions from the current administration. In Managua, the Juventud Sandinista 19 de Julio placed offerings at the Plaza de la Revolución and the General Cemetery. Copresident Rosario Murillo issued a national message regarding the spiritual significance of the day, while several major banks limited in-person services to a half-day.
