Death of cryptocurrency figure Hsin-Ju Chuang

Overview

Hsin-Ju Chuang, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry and former partner at venture capital firm Hack VC, died on August 24 at age 37. She was found in a vehicle on Interstate 15 near the Harvard area, east of Barstow, and pronounced dead at the scene. Death records from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner have since confirmed the cause of death as suicide.

Before her passing, Chuang engaged in a public dispute with Hack VC on social media. In a post on X dated August 23, she alleged that the firm imposed extreme working conditions, claiming she worked 78 to 84 hours per week, which led to severe insomnia and thyroid disease. She further claimed she had been threatened with industry blacklisting and stated she had refused a settlement agreement because it required her to remain silent about her experiences. Chuang had expressed an intention to release evidence regarding her tenure at the firm on August 26.

Alexander Pack, co-founder of Hack VC, stated the firm was ‘shocked and saddened’ by the news, noting the company had not been in direct contact with Chuang for over ten months. Hack VC also noted there were ‘significant differences’ in the understanding of the events, though the firm later deleted its statement regarding the dispute. The California Highway Patrol has indicated that investigations into the circumstances of her death are ongoing.
