Murder case filed in death of former Air Force officer
Overview
Following the recovery of 28-year-old former Flight Lieutenant KM Tahsif Souri’s body from the Turag River on October 28, a murder case has been filed against unidentified individuals. The complaint was lodged by the victim’s father, KM Enayetul Karim, at the Uttarkhan Police Station in Dhaka. Souri had been reported missing from his Uttara residence on Tuesday evening after leaving to meet a junior friend, Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip.
CCTV footage showed the two individuals leaving on separate motorcycles. Footage also revealed that on the night of October 27, Souri, Dwip, and a young woman identified as Disha spent approximately ninety minutes at a restaurant and bar in Uttara before traveling toward the Mazar Basti area in Tongi.
Investigators from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) have taken Dwip into custody. On October 31, Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas granted a four-day police remand for Dwip to facilitate the investigation. During initial questioning, Dwip claimed that while they were in the Mazar Basti area, they were chased by several individuals, some of whom were reportedly wearing police uniforms. Dwip alleged that Souri jumped into the river to escape while Dwip hid behind a boundary pillar.
Police have since arrested Disha. Investigators are examining inconsistencies in Dwip’s statements and are working to identify other potential suspects and recover evidence, including a motorcycle found in the Tongi area. While authorities await a full autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death, the victim’s family has rejected any suggestion of suicide, alleging Souri may have been murdered due to suspected connections to footage of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country in August 2024.
