Death of Naga peace activist Niketu Iralu

Overview

Dr. Niketu Iralu, a veteran Naga peace activist and social worker, has passed away in New Delhi. Reports indicate he died following a cardiac arrest at age 89 or 91.

Iralu was a significant figure in the North East India peace movement, dedicating approximately 65 years to the Initiatives of Change (formerly the Moral Re-Armament movement). His work emphasized personal and community transformation as the basis for political peace. He served as chairman of the Naga National Reconciliation Commission in 2004 and was a signatory to the 2002 Second Naga Consultative Meeting in Bangkok.

Following his death, various Naga organizations and leaders, including the Naga Hoho, the Global Naga Forum, and Th. Muivah of the NSCN/GPRN, have offered tributes. He was described by supporters as a “towering moral voice” and a “rare voice of conscience” who worked to bridge tribal divisions and foster relationships between the Naga people and India.
