Vrindavan ashram controversy follows death of Premanand disc

Overview

Deepak Lodhi, also known as Rasik Dulari Sharan, a 25-year-old disciple of spiritual leader Sant Premanand Maharaj, died after falling from the fourth floor of the Guru Kripa Kunj Ashram in Vrindavan on September 25. While police are treating the incident as a suspected suicide, investigators are examining several unusual factors. A blood-stained electronic grinder was recovered from Lodhi’s room, and a postmortem report confirmed he sustained injuries to his private parts and died due to excessive blood loss.

Investigations have expanded to include the Yamuna Vihar Kunj ashram in the Mant area, with seven specialized police teams questioning more than 50 people. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Allahabad High Court seeking a high-level investigation.

The controversy has intensified following allegations from Dinesh Sharma, president of the ‘Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sangharsh Nyas’, who claimed the ‘Keli Kunj Ashram’ has become a hub for land mafias. Sharma alleged the ashram has split into groups of genuine and fake saints engaged in illegal property businesses controlling approximately 15 ashrams.

In response to these tensions and the presence of individuals described as having a ‘criminal mentality’, Premanand Maharaj has moved from the Keli Kunj Ashram to the ‘Belvan Ashram’, located 20 kilometers away. Local leaders and Sadhvi Indulekha have called for increased security for the saint, and requests for ‘Z-plus’ security have been submitted to the Chief Minister to mitigate risks to his safety and reputation.
