Newly released and declassified documents have revealed details regarding a 2017 FBI counterintelligence investigation into Donald Trump, codenamed ‘Operation Oxford Comma.’ The classified operation was launched following the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey to determine if the President was acting as an asset for Russia.

Reports indicate the investigation was kept discrete to avoid appearing in regular files, a method described as the ‘least intrusive’ way to manage potential national security risks. This operation eventually became part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s broader Russia investigation.

The Trump administration released these memoranda to support claims of a ‘deep state’ attempting to undermine the presidency. While the documents clarify how the investigation was structured and subsequently marginalized, they do not provide new evidence that alters the original justifications for the inquiry. A White House official noted that the original investigation lacked substantial evidence, stating that ‘almost everything that the FBI had at that time had refuted or excluded that Trump or his campaign collaborated with Russia at that time.’
