Delhi air pollution vehicle restriction measures

Overview

To combat rising winter air pollution, the Delhi government and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced a ban on non-Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) compliant vehicles registered outside the capital. Scheduled to run from November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027, the restriction is expected to affect over 10 lakh vehicles across the National Capital Region (NCR), including Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad.

Exemptions include electric vehicles, CNG-powered vehicles, and essential services like ambulances. Enforcement strategies involve the use of AI-enabled Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and the deployment of transport department personnel.

By late October, the Delhi transport department prepared for implementation by deploying approximately 250 enforcement personnel and 39 specialized teams to monitor 13 major toll plazas around the clock. Authorities also intensified inspections for valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, issuing thousands of fines in the weeks leading up to the ban.
