Delhi electric bus fleet expansion

Overview

Delhi is expanding its electric bus fleet and supporting infrastructure to facilitate a transition toward large-scale electric public transport. The city has increased its electric bus count to 5,088, making it the largest such fleet in India, with long-term goals to reach approximately 14,000 buses by 2028-29.

To support this growth, the Delhi government has sanctioned over Rs 300 crore to develop charging infrastructure at seven depots in South West Delhi, including Dichaon Kalan, Kair, Kharkhari Nahar, and Ghumanhera. The project, which includes 66KV in-feeds, three 66/11 KV grids, and seven 11KV switching stations, is expected to be completed within 18 months. Funding will be distributed across two fiscal years, with approximately Rs 120.25 crore disbursed this year.

Under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, Switch Mobility has secured an order for 840 air-conditioned electric buses for Delhi, consisting of 420 9-metre and 420 12-metre vehicles. These will be deployed via the Delhi Transport Corporation and the Delhi Transport Department. While the PM E-DRIVE scheme has been extended to March 2028 with a ₹4,391 crore subsidy allocation, rising demand from various states may require additional government schemes to meet surplus requirements.
