Delhi school takeover crackdown

In July 2026 the Delhi government began a series of enforcement actions against private schools that were found to be violating safety and regulatory standards. The first case involved a Janakpuri school where an official inquiry uncovered serious safety lapses, alleged child‑abuse concealment, illegal branches, non‑functional CCTV, and financial irregularities. Education Minister Ashish Sood issued a show‑cause notice and warned of a possible takeover and lease cancellation.

A few days later a surprise inspection at a private school in Vikaspuri revealed extensive fire‑safety breaches, unauthorised structures, blocked emergency access, illegal groundwater extraction, underpaid teachers, and unrecognised senior‑secondary classes. The same minister again directed the department to serve a show‑cause notice and prepared to assume management if the school failed to comply. Together, the incidents illustrate a broader Delhi‑government initiative to tighten oversight of private educational institutions and to intervene when student safety or operational compliance is compromised.
