Demographic and enrollment shifts in Central European school

Demographic and enrollment trends are shifting across educational systems in Austria and Germany. In Vienna, data from the Austrian Integration Fund indicates that Muslim students now outnumber Christian students in primary schools, representing 39% to 42% of the population compared to 31% to 33.3% for Christians. In secondary schools, Muslim students comprise approximately 49% of the student body.

Language proficiency is a notable factor in these shifts, with nearly 48.9% of students in Vienna state primary schools not speaking German at home. To address this, the Austrian parliament has approved measures for 2027 that will replace two weeks of summer holidays with intensive language instruction for students under 15 with insufficient German skills.

In Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region, student numbers are expected to rise by 1.1 percent for the 2026/27 school year due to the establishment of junior classes, though long-term forecasts predict a decline to 1.07 million students by 2040/41. Meanwhile, in Vorarlberg, Austria, the new school year faces challenges regarding teacher shortages, prompting officials to utilize student teachers and retired educators to maintain coverage.
